Study on the concentration and prevalence of Asbestos fibres in Christchurch

10 May 2022

Over the last month, there has been significant interest on the impact of Asbestos being used in our in our water networks. This has resulted in a number of media enquires on this issue, to us, the Ministry of Health, and Christchurch City Council.

Staff from Taumata Arowai met with experts from the University of Otago’s School of Geography, and ENGEO Consultancy, to hear about their research on Asbestos in our pipe networks. They told us how from the 1930s to the 1980s pipe networks installed in New Zealand were comprised of asbestos cement composites. Today, New Zealand still has significant lengths of these pipes in use. To see the research discussed, please see the below document.
